Manipulate Through Mind Reading. Advanced Interview Techniques

You will agree, if you can mind read the job interviewer, you can increase your manipulation skills, increasing your job offers. Cold reading picks up on the non verbal cues that a person unconsciously gives away and feeds back information the person has said to build rapport, trust and authenticity. Directing a person’s thoughts before telling the person they are thinking of X is the second powerful technique in the mind readers bag of tricks. Both of these techniques can be used in the job interview situation.

Answer the following questions:

What is 5 + 1?

What is 4 + 2?

What is 2 + 4?

What is 1 + 5?

What is 3 + 3?

Say out loud, Blue, Orange, Black

What is the first vegetable you can think off?

Is it a carrot? With nine out of ten of you I would have guessed correctly as I have influenced your thoughts. These following 9 techniques will empower you to read the interviewer so you know if the employer is having positive or negative thoughts about you - in an interview situation having this knowledge is a big advantage.

1. Pupil Sizes - Watch for changes in pupil size. Shrinking pupils generally mean the person is not interested, while  enlarging pupils is a sign of interest.

2. Hand Gestures – People talk their hand as well as verbally. In panel interview, as an example, one interviewer may say to you “I can see you would fit in well with my team, but there could be one or two obstacles to overcome..”  While pointing at a colleague, unconsciously he is saying you need to persuade this one. People’s body and language and gestures, tell you what the person is thinking.

3. Finger tapping – some of your interview answers will be long and detailed. If the interview is going well and the interviewer is intrigued with what you are saying then this is fine. But you need to know when to stop, you need to know when the interviewer is bored and on the verge of not listening. Watch out for the interviewer tapping their feet or drumming their figures – this is a sign of boredom.

4. Nodding Dog - Interviewers will nod when they unconsciously agree with you; this is highly reassuring when you’re explaining your strengths or ideas. When in rapport you will also notice the interviewer mirror your body posture and may even mirror your blinking and breathing rhythm

5. The Shoulder Shrug - when explaining a past task or successful project, and the interviewer shrugs their shoulders, rethink your answer. A shoulder shrug can mean that the person does not understand what you mean.

6. Crossed Arms Across the Body - many of us heard that crossed arms means the person is putting up a barrier. This is a defensive piece of body language showing you the person disagrees with you or they don’t like what you are saying

7. Touching Lips - when telling lies our unconscious mind automatically sends a signal to our hands to cover our mouth to stop the deceitful words from escaping, which is why when people touch their lips when talking it can often be taken for a sign that the person is lying

8. Hand Clench - people clench their hands together (fingers interlocked) when they feel frustrated, don’t be tricked if the interviewer with clenched hands is smiling as deep down they will still feel frustrated

9. Hand Supporting Head -   if you observe an interviewer resting their head on their hand (normally with a finger pointing upwards) is a sign that the interviewer is having negative thoughts about you or what you are saying

* when reading body language it is best to look for clusters of body language and gestures before creating an opinion as one single clue can be easily misinterpreted as an interviewer may scratch their nose (which could be taken as a cue that the interviewer is lying) because they had an itchy nose.
