Sharing the Success – A CV Project…What Happens Next?

I have worked with many people over the years, helping them to craft an effective job search strategy, equipping them with the tools that they need to succeed.

My absolute favourite part of my job has always been getting feedback. Initially, that my customer is happy with the results and now feels confident [let’s face it….nothing rocks the confidence more than losing a job, or even thinking about moving on to pastures new, leaving behind a job and people they know well], and motivated to attack the job market!

Secondly, and even more importantly, nothing brings me more satisfaction than an email, call or message to tell me “Success! I have a new job!” Enormous satisfaction!

Of course, I only play a part in the process. The sheer determination and personal motivation of the person I am working with is the vital role, but I wanted to share a recent experience to give you an idea of how I feel when my work impacts positively on individuals and families!

Here is a narrative of an interview with someone I enjoyed [and had the privilege of] working with recently.

The Interview

Me: So, tell me about your life before moving from Syria to UAE.

Douha: I graduated with a law degree in 2011 and I was in the process of training with a Law firm and gaining some experience. The work is unpaid, but essential.

Me: Without going into too much painful detail, there is a lot of trouble in your home country, how did this affect you and your family?

Douha: Well, in 2012, our family decided to leave Syria, which was really hard…our family and whole life was there. It was becoming impossible to make a living and many people were scared by the developments taking place, many people were leaving, so as a family, we decided it was time to leave.

Me: That was a big decision, what made you decide to relocate to where you did?

Douha: I have six siblings and my brother was already living in the area, so we decided to join him there.

Me: So, you were a trainee in Law before leaving, how did you support yourself in UAE?

Douha: Initially, I was working in Fashion Couture, which was good, but my heart was still with a career in Law. I managed to find work as a Junior Lawyer, but the wage was poor and the commute was long and expensive. I found another role, but it didn’t work out.

Me: When we connected online, what was your situation?

Douha: I was finding it hard, I had been out of work for about a year, I was applying for lots of work, but without success!

Me: How did things change after we had worked together?

Douha: I was really happy with my new CV. I felt more confident, and the response I was now getting was so much more positive, I was very quickly invited to several interviews.

Me: Great! How long did it take to find a new job?

Douha: I signed a new contract to work as a Junior Lawyer about a month later, the work is enjoyable and for now, the salary is good too!

Me: Well done! How is life different for you now?

Douha: I am working so hard, I am so busy now, but it’s great! I still get to spend lots of time with my family and friends, but I feel really settled and satisfied now after a year of uncertainty, you helped me so much!

Me: I am so pleased for you and I am glad to have been able to help.

Douha: You did! In fact, I am still getting calls from prospective employers.

Your Success is My Success

We chatted for a little bit, but can you imagine how I felt after the call, the sense of job satisfaction?

Feedback like this is awesome and obviously contributes to how much I love my work…especially when a person’s circumstances are changed so much for the better.

“Your success is my success!” That is the way I feel about what I do. I get to share the success of those I work with. Some people are transitioning between jobs, which is scary enough, but as was the case with this young lady, it was her entire life that was changing.

I’m really honoured to have been able to play a small part in this!
