Signs that you need to change your approach to job acquisition

Here are some key signs that you may need some help with your job applications and CVs.

You send out 100s of CVs

This should never be necessary. Whilst some ‘speculative’ applications are a very good idea, it’s not a numbers game. When it comes to advertised jobs, you should remember that recruiters do want to recruit someone. If not, they have failed.
If you are not being chosen, it’s best to find out why and then address this. This is much more effective than simply sending out more.

You can’t motivate yourself to apply

Job searching should be an enjoyable experience. Each opportunity is a potentially life changing experience. Knowing what you are best at and where to find the right opportunity is a major part of resolving this.

Job searching bores you

This is probably because you are not getting the results you hoped for. As per the previous point, the more successful you are, the more enjoyable it is. So find out what you need to improve on rather than persevering with the wrong approach.

You are over qualified

I know that this is a very frustrating thing for job seekers to hear. The answer is never to leave out your qualifications and experience. You don’t want to start a potential long term relationship with your new employer feeling misled. There are techniques that can be used to present your experience, qualifications and aspirations in a more appropriate way.

You are under qualified

Also very frustrating – especially if no prior experience or qualifications were stipulated. You have 2 choices in order to resolve this: Find ways of presenting yourself as a useful employee – maybe through some other experience that you have not mentioned or get experience or qualifications that you need. In my experience, even a small amount of relevant experience can make the difference. What about industry associations that you could join to show that you see yourself as a specialist? Or attending their events or short courses?
When I recruit people, I really value the commitment and enthusiasm that can be demonstrated in such ways. You don’t have to have done something for a long time to be able to speak effectively at interview.

Please comment with any other issues or concerns around job applications.
