There are three main resume formats: reverse chronological, functional, and combination. For a social media marketing resume, the reverse chronological format is generally the most effective. It allows you to highlight your most recent relevant experience first and work backward from there.
Reverse chronological resumes are easily readable by both applicant tracking systems (ATS) and hiring managers. This is critical since the ATS scan is often what determines whether your resume will actually make it into the hiring manager’s hands, and assuming that it does, the hiring manager will likely spend only about 7 seconds reviewing your resume.
Begin your social media resume by adding your name and contact information, followed by a compelling resume summary or objective. If you are already experienced in the social media industry, use a resume summary to highlight your accomplishments, past duties, and experience. Quantify your achievements with numbers and percentages whenever possible to show potential employers how well you performed in previous positions.
If you do not have prior social media marketing experience (such as if you are a student, recent graduate, or making a career change), opt for a resume objective. You can still use quantified achievements to demonstrate the value that you will provide for the potential employer. Highlight transferable skills and experience that have helped prepare you for your target position.
Additionally, you can use your resume objective to outline your career goals to align them with the company’s needs. Mention the company by name and use keywords from the job posting to help your resume pass an ATS scan and show the employer that you’ve taken the time to customize your resume for this specific job opening.
Over 80% of Americans have active social media accounts of some kind, so just using social media doesn’t necessarily show that you are qualified for a social media marketing job. As such, it’s important to demonstrate on your resume that you have relevant marketing experience or plenty of transferable skills.
For example, maybe the only social media experience you have is managing your own personal Instagram page. Has your following grown over the last year? Mention the percentage of audience growth. Have you partnered with brands to do sponsored posts or stepped up your hashtag game? Those are transferable skills to highlight on your resume.
Many different types of online marketing overlap somewhat in terms of skills and knowledge, including search engine optimization (SEO), blogging, social media marketing, affiliate marketing, and so forth. So, even if you have only previously worked on a blog or an online newsletter, you can showcase your transferable skills and accomplishments such as readership growth, blog traffic increases, and the ability to write and edit compelling content.
The skills section on your resume is another place that you can really make your social media marketing prowess shine. Include both hard skills (technical skills that you can learn) and soft skills (interpersonal skills or intrinsic personality traits that can’t be easily learned).
