Whether you’ve just finished Uni or are looking to fund a career break, working at a summer school can be a brilliant and lucrative experience. Whilst big names like Camp America dominate the international market, there are summer schools in almost every city, as well as in more remote rural locations.
Whether you’re looking to work with underprivileged children and really make a difference, or are simply in it for the cash, there will be a summer school out there for you. The main thing to remember is that the experience will be full on, and you need to accept that you’ll likely be working with kids 24/7. The traditional working day goes out of the window, but you’ll be up and about rather than tied to a desk!
Here are 7 of the top reasons you should consider ditching the office job and launching your summer school career:
Probably the biggest plus of all is that fact that many summer schools are residential. Free accommodation means that you can not only save a huge amount of money, but really engage with the summer school environment living on-site.
Often you’ll have a great location, in the center of a city or beautiful campus, and will be living and working near the other counsellors/ summer school staff. This means you’ll never be short of company!
Whilst living arrangements can vary from sharing a cabin with children (be prepared, this will be intense), to having your own ensuite room, it’s usually of a great standard, and free!
As well as having your accommodation provided, you’ll get to experience the delights of being fully catered! Whether it’s chips every day or a nice healthy salad, at least you won’t have to worry about splashing the cash on meals.
Bear in mind that camp food can get a tad repetitive, but stick to the catering and you can bank all of the money that you make!
Whilst you will be traipsing around with a large group of children, often ferrying them here there and everywhere, when you actually do get to your location you’ll get to join in all of the activities and have just as much fun as the kids you’re responsible for.
Learning to ride a horse, ice skate and experience virtual reality are just a few of the exciting options you could have in store this summer.
Whilst this may not be the main motivator for all summer school employees, the fulfilling aspect of working with children is certainly a factor in many counsellor’s choice to work at a summer school.
Seeing children grow and learn under your experience can be hugely rewarding, especially when they recognize and thank you for it.
When working at a summer school you’ll likely be at a similar place in your life to the other summer school workers. Living, eating and working together means that you have to get on – but beyond that, you’re likely to make some great new friends!
It may sound cheesy, but life long bonds can be formed at summer school, for you as well as for the kids. Who knows, you may even meet your future spouse whilst working at a summer school!
Because of the residential aspect of many summer schools, the experience can allow you to live in and explore a completely new place.
Whether this is an international location or simply a city in your own country that you’ve never really experienced, you’ll be learning and experiencing something new, which is always valuable!
If you’ve never held a position of authority before, summer school leadership positions can be a great way to hone your skills and work on those all-important leadership attributes.
These skills are likely to stand you in great stead for the future and will look impressive on any CV.
