Successfully landing a new job is rarely achieved prior to encountering many obstacles combined with rejection and disappointment. It is understandable that healthy egos are often bruised and self-confidence challenged, leaving many struggling to find the motivation needed to maintain a positive and productive job search.
Most tasks undertaken provide us with some sense of accomplishment or gratification within a short and determined time frame which fuels our motivation. Unfortunately, job searches don’t often provide many of the same indicators of success and worse, the time frame for securing a new position is rarely met. A job search is not comparable to many other endeavours we could pursue such as building a house, planning an event, cleaning out the garage, or planting a garden! Understanding and accepting the signs of accomplishment are not as easily recognizable in a job search is the first step to staying motivated. The second step is to assume the responsibility of creating your own daily successes.
By focusing on a clearly defined course of action with realistic and attainable goals, those much needed signs of accomplishment can be recognized and result in a steady dose of motivation to keep you moving forward and secure your target or dream job. If you are truly committed to a successful career move, your job search must be considered nothing less than a full time job in itself so there’s no time to veer off course!
There are many essential components to a successful job search including extensive research, networking, a professional resume, coaching, and an impressive online presence. Each of these can be established as quantifiable and attainable goals. At the end of the day, how many companies did you contact or follow on social media? How many face-to-face meetings were scheduled? Did you send out your resume to the number of recipients planned? Did you visit each online site to review your profile and establish new connections? Every day you invest in your job search and meet all of your goals is an accomplishment regardless of a lost opportunity for an interview or coming in second in the job selection process.
If you are not experiencing some rejection or disappointment, it is unlikely you are putting in the effort that is necessary to land the position you are working towards. Keep moving forward setting realistic goals and accept each missed opportunity as a necessary step towards achieving the position you are seeking. Stay positive, accomplish daily goals and you’ll stay motivated!
“BE PERSISTENT, AND PATIENT, BUT KEEP MOVING. Success does take time. Whether it is weight loss, a new business or learning new skills... time, patience, practice, perseverance and forward movement are the key. You don't have to run! You just have to keep moving in the right direction and it's perfectly okay for you to stop and catch your breath from time to time. Just remember to take a look at how far you've climbed when you do!” ~ Chalene Johnson
